The first year attending the World Bodypainting championships 2008 was a dream come true!
The world bodypainting festival is THE place to go to if you are a bodypainter.
It happens every year in the south of Austria, and is huge festival with painters from around the world competing and showcasing their art.
It is the most colourful place, with great music, food and bodypaint. There are competitions in body painting, specialFX, face painting and Avant garde makeup.
After months of preparation and creation of a large tail, claws, and elaborate headpiece. The day had come to transform Jules into a Chinese Stone dragon with the help of my sister ( @myrthe_mua ) who was only 16 at that time.
The inside or the front of the body was painted elaborately with lots of colour and glitter to create a strong contrast with the grey stone of the dragon.
I have always enjoyed an element of surprise in my body art, so when entering the jury tent, Jules just looked like any other body paint but when he moved into a crawling position he turned into an amazing stone dragon. It had been a very hot day and a storm was brewing, rain came down in buckets when the winners were announced.
We came Second Place in the Special FX body paint category!
Which was amazing and I see this as the start of my international bodypaint career.
Then 7 years later I went back a couple of times, winning First Place in Special FX Make-up and the year after that I won the World title of Special FX Body paint together with Alex Hansen (An amazingly talented airbrush artist).
After that I was invited to sit in the Jury which was a super privilege and a huge job. The body paint category has about 150 entries alone and they all are judged, so judging is quite the colour and paint overload! But I've learned so much about what makes a great body paint and how to present your work.
Going to the world champs was like 'coming home' for me, a reunion of friends with a shared passion and a whole lot of parties.
This year there is no event as Covid 19 happened, however there is the very first Virtual World Champ competition and anyone can enter.
So we have opened up our studio for friends, professionals and amateurs to come and paint alongside me, we will provide drinks and nibbles and create some epic art together.
We will live stream to the actual world champs, to be part of their documentary.
I will be inviting a professional photographer to take images for yourself and to send to the comp as your entry.
